Gandhi’s struggle against racial injustice in South Africa

Champaran and Kheda: Gandhi’s early successes in India
- Gandhi’s first major success in India came in 1917 in Champaran, Bihar, where British landlords had imposed harsh taxes on peasants.
- This was his first civil disobedience movement in India.
- He also successfully mediated the Ahmedabad Cotton Mill strike in 1918.
- In Kheda, Gujarat, he helped the farmers who were suffering from famine and tax burden. He successfully resolved this through non-cooperation.

Supreme Court: 14 days time limit mandatory for UAPA restrictions
- The Supreme Court ruled that the 14-day time limit for imposing ban under UAPA is mandatory for both the Central and State governments and not discretionary.
- A bench of Justices C.T. Ravikumar and Sanjay Karol stressed that delay may reduce the effectiveness of the law, leading to violation of the rights of the accused.
- This decision is applicable in future, strengthening accountability in national security matters.

- National Quantum Mission (NQM) launched thematic hubs (T-Hubs) focused on interdisciplinary collaboration in areas such as physics, computer science and materials science.
- These hubs aim to bridge the gap between research and industry, promoting telecom, defence and healthcare innovations.
- NQM will also support entrepreneurs, thereby boosting India’s role in quantum technology.

CSIR-CDRI and Zydus to collaborate to develop drug for CKD-induced osteoporosis
- CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) Lucknow and Zydus Lifesciences Ltd have jointly developed an oral drug targeting a protein called sclerostin, which is associated with osteoporosis in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
- This collaborative research aims to create a safe alternative to conventional osteoporosis medications, which often exacerbate kidney function problems in CKD patients.
