Forest Cover Mapping
- Definition: Land area of more than 1 hectare having tree canopy density of more than 10% including orchards, bamboo, palms etc.
Forest Classification:
- Very dense forest (VDF): canopy density ≥70%1
- Medium Dense Forest (MDF): Canopy density 40-70%.
- Open Forest (OF): Canopy density 10-40%.
- Scrubs: canopy density < 10%, usually mixed shrubs with scattered trees.

Forest Survey of India (FSI)
- It was formed on 1 June 1981 after a pre-investment survey of forest resources.
- Launched in 1965 by the Government of India, sponsored by FAO and UNDP.
- Parent organization: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
- Objective: Regular assessment and monitoring of India’s forest resources; also involved in training, research and extension services.
- Headquarters: Dehradun.

- वन संसाधनों के पूर्व-निवेश सर्वेक्षण के बाद 1 जून 1981 को इसका गठन किया गया।
- भारत सरकार द्वारा 1965 में शुरू किया गया, जिसे FAO और UNDP द्वारा प्रायोजित किया गया।
- मूल संगठनः पर्यावरण, वन और जलवायु परिवर्तन मंत्रालय।
- उद्देश्यः भारत के वन संसाधनों का नियमित मूल्यांकन और निगरानी; प्रशिक्षण, अनुसंधान और विस्तार सेवाओं में भी शामिल।

Key findings of ISFR 2023
- Forest and Tree Cover: The total forest and tree cover in the country is 8,27,356.95 sq km, which is 25.17% of its geographical area. Forest cover is 7,15,342.61 sq km (21.76%), while tree cover is 1,12,014.34 sq km (3.41%).

18th India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023:
- Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav released the India State of Forest Report 2023 (ISFR 2023) on December 21, 2024 at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.
- ISFR 2023 is the 18th edition of this category.
- Published every two years since 1987 by the Forest Survey of India, this report provides a detailed assessment of India’s forest and tree resources.
18वीं भारत वन स्थिति रिपोर्ट (ISFR) 2023:
- पर्यावरण, वन एवं जलवायु परिवर्तन मंत्री श्री भूपेंद्र यादव ने 21 दिसंबर, 2024 को वन अनुसंधान संस्थान, देहरादून में भारत वन स्थिति रिपोर्ट 2023 (ISFR 2023) जारी की।
- ISFR 2023 इस श्रेणी का 18वां संस्करण है।
- वर्ष 1987 से भारतीय वन सर्वेक्षण द्वारा हर दो वर्ष में प्रकाशित यह रिपोर्ट भारत के वन और वृक्ष संसाधनों का विस्तृत मूल्यांकन प्रस्तुत करती है।
